Instructional Practice: Standard #8

Standard #8: Instructional Strategies. The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.

Artifact #1:

The following artifact is an example of standard #8 because it demonstrates my ability to use various instructional strategies through interactive technology.  The following images are screenshots of a smart notebook activity I developed for a 2nd-grade mathematics lesson on mentally adding and subtracting with 20.  This activity also shows my understanding of this standard by offering different strategies for students to learn how to mentally add and subtract.  Throughout the lesson, I am constantly relating problems to real life experiences that students could relate to in order to make this knowledge more meaningful.

Artifact #2:

This artifact is a part of a 3rd grade lesson plan incorporating the higher order thinking skill analyzing viewpoints.  In this lesson, I ask students higher order questions that focus on analyzing viewpoints based on characters thoughts, actions, and feelings and how these contribute to the sequence of events.  This demonstrates my understanding by exhibiting how I can build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways, and encourages learners to develop a skill that they can use in various texts or situations.
