Content Knowledge: Standard #5

Standard #5: Application of Content: The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues.

Artifact #1:

The artifact I have selected for this standard is a WebQuest I created for fourth grade lesson plan activity addressing standard 4.ESS3. Earth and Human Activity "1) Obtain and combine information to describe that energy and fuels are derived from natural resources and that some energy and fuel sources are renewable (sunlight, wind, water) and some are not (fossil fuels, minerals)."

This artifact showcases my understanding of this standard by demonstrating my ability to connect concepts and engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to pollution problems in the real world and their daily lives.  In addition, the activity challenges students to offer different perspectives on how to best solve the problem of pollution in today's society and in the daily lives of students.

Artifact #2

The following artifact is an example of a mathematical misconception method I implemented in a math lesson for 1st grade focusing on the meaning of the equals sign.   The lesson incorporates commutative and associative properties throughout the lesson from beginning to end.  This artifact shows my understanding of engaging students in critical thinking opportunities through higher order thinking questions.  In addition, the lesson activities and questions engage students in collaborative problem solving word problems that they can relate to.
