Content Knowledge: Standard #4

Standard #4: Content Knowledge: The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and creates learning experiences that make these aspects of the discipline accessible and meaningful for learners to assure mastery of the content.

Artifact #1:

The following example is of the instructional and guided practice sections of a 1st grade math lesson, and demonstrates my understanding of the central concept and multiple ways of solving math problems.

In addition, it demonstrates an example of teaching students how to ask inquiry questions.  For example, in this lesson I incorporated how students should inquire whether "2+4+6" is the same as "6+4+2," and relate this inquire to other problems in math using the commutative property.

Artifact #2:

Another artifact I have selected for standard number four is from a third grade ELA lesson plan.  This lesson plan was done as part of a unit plan for the book Sarah, Plain and Tall, and focused a lot on vocabulary comprehension.  I created an learning experience and exit ticket for my students during this lesson.  I created a graphic organizer that can be changed for differentiated levels, and I made an exit ticket "I Have Who Has" Game for students.  This demonstrates my content knowledge on the subject through my own personal creation of the game, and creates a learning experience of the content that is more meaningful to the students.  This activity makes the content more meaningful because students have to listen and understand the words they are given and the word they are listening for.  This activity helps the teacher see if students have really mastered the content as well.
